Got Beads? Mardi Gras Themed Party!

02.08.10

If you can’t make it to New Orleans for Mardi Gras, why not bring Mardi Gras to you? You can turn your home into Bourbon Street with a fun Mardi Gras themed party!

It is very easy to give your party a Mardi Gras touch. Do a little research first, before you decide to throw a Mardi Gras inspired party, just so you don’t forget any key elements.

Here are a few things you’ll want to definitely include in your re-creation of The Big Easy’s biggest celebration:

The colors: PURPLE, GREEN AND GOLD! These will be your favorite colors while planning your party. These are the colors of Mardi Gras. Purple represents justice; green represents faith; and gold represents power.

The food: A great way to jazz up your party is with some good Cajun food! This can be seafood gumbo, crawfish etouffee (crawfish anything), jambalaya, and red beans and rice.

The music: New Orleans is known for their jazz and brass bands! You’re party would not be the same without authentic music from New Orleans.

The decorations: Not only can you wear beads, but you can also decorate with them! Hang them to make it look reminiscent of how the beads hang off of the trees after a Mardi Gras parade.

The dress code: Literally just about anything will do! Masks, jester costumes, hats, etc…

And last but not least, THE CAKE! The King Cake is the official cake of the Mardi Gras celebration. There is some history behind the King Cake, so be sure to read into it before you attempt to re-create this must-have treat. After reading the history, you will find that baked inside is a little baby, whoever receives the slice with the baby in it, is supposed to host the King Cake party the following year! This offers a way for a Mardi Gras party to become a tradition between you and your guests.

Have you been to Mardi Gras? Are there any other ways to make a Mardi Gras party more memorable?

We used this theme for our Super Bowl party and it was a big hit. We played zydeco music during halftime instead of watching The Who perform, was much more festive!
